The first of a series of fashion, luxury and lifestyle talks, Off The Record is a frank and uncensored discussion on the issues, challenges and opportunities within Hong Kong and China.
Off The Record #1 focused on the future of boutique, independent and niche labels, both international and domestic, looking to gain traction Greater China’s rapidly evolving fashion market.
Moderated by Jing Zhang and Abid Rahman, the three guest panelists came from different areas of the industry: fashion mogul Jimmy Chan of Semeiotics Inc., retailer Arnault Castel of Kapok, and designer Elle Waldmann offered up lively debate and discussion with the audience at Time & Space.
The audience itself was a mix or brand heads, CEOs, international sales managers and government trade representatives. The Hub HK founders brought over a contingent of overseas guests from Mainland China, India, Europe and the UK. The intimate cocktail party provided an opportunity for guests, panelists and industry figures to meet, mingle and collaborate.
The discussion tackled issues such as the notoriously difficult retail landscape in Hong Kong, the stark differences between Chinese and Hong Kong fashion, the budding independent scene in Greater China, as well as success stories and failures for niche labels. An industry focused approach dealt with the practical details and the mechanics of operating well in the region. Broader discussion touched upon the changing creative climate in Asia with respect to niche labels and customers.
